SAS disk drives used on POWER5/POWER5+ systems are placed in the EXP 12S SAS disk drawer (#5886). Either 139.5 GB (#3677), 283.7 GB (#3678), or 428.43 GB (#3658) SAS drives can be used. These 3.5-inch SAS disk drives are driven by the PCI-X DDR 1.5 GB Cache RAID Adapter (#5904 or #5908). Features 5904 and 5908 are the same adapter, but feature 5908 includes a blind swap cassette for use in the feature 5790 I/O drawer. The PCI-X DDR 1.5 GB Cache RAID Adapter (#5904 or #5908) connects to an EXP 12S disk drawer via a YO SAS cable.

Normal POWER5/POWER5+ disk protection rules apply. Disk drives should be protected by using either RAID 5, RAID 6, or mirroring. Hot spare is also supported. The 1.5 GB write cache of the disk controller is protected by an auxiliary write cache built into the double-slot adapter in addition to a built-in battery that can be hot-plugged. SAS disk drives can be mirrored against SCSI disk drives of similar capacity. For example, the 139.5 GB SAS drive can be mirrored against the 141.14 GB SCSI drive.

The PCI-X DDR 1.5 GB Cache RAID Adapter (#5904 or #5908) cannot be placed in the POWER5 system unit. It can be placed in an I/O tower or drawer attached to the system unit. The following table shows the supported hardware and the maximum number of adapters that can be used with the hardware.
